Meet the mood master: Adam Hochschuler updates the art of candle-making

Mar 25 2020

Moodcast Fragrance Co. founder Adam Hochschuler first crossed our path by way of our friends at Story at Macy’s — they raved about his line of beautifully scented candles that set the mood and smell delicious. What we really love is Moodcast’s candle vessels, which boast a high-gloss glass circle that enhance the flame’s overall glow. We touched base with the Dallas-based entrepreneur — and learned all about his affinity for the Backstreet Boys, his "How I Built This" moment and the fragrance that boosts his mood the most.

Q.
In a couple words, describe your day job.
A.

Candlemaker.

Q.
Where is home for you?
A.

I grew up in Richardson and now live with my family in the Park Cities.

Q.
Favorite Moodcast fragrance?
A.

As I write this, it’s Royal. I’m thrilled with how it came together knowing the mood we were trying to achieve. That being said, I rotate through them all depending on my mood.

Q.
What sparked your big candle idea?
A.

I fell in love with fragrance's ability to change or enhance my mood. I couldn’t find a line of candles that talked about mood and had a luxury aesthetic. I’ve outgrown the idea that lavender equals calm candles dyed purple.

Q.
Favorite places to hang in Dallas?
A.

E Bar is the absolute best Tex-Mex — everyone gets their own salsa for the chips, which I deeply appreciate. There are no better cocktails than those at Atwater Alley. The bartenders have never steered me wrong and I love to hangout by the pool in the summer.

Q.
You lived in LA for a bit. Fave places in the City of Angels?
A.

Jon & Vinny’s is just the best Italian you will ever have. The Spicy Fusilli alone is worth the trip.

Q.
Entrepreneurs who inspire you?
A.

My brother. I was fortunate to hear so many first-hand accounts of how he built his company and it was a big part of the inspiration to try it for myself. My very own “How I Built This” (an amazing podcast). You probably want the company name, but I’m going to make you Google it. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Q.
Finish this sentence: If I wasn't running a candle company, I would be ...
A.

...a stay-at-home dad. Nothing compares to the joy I get from my son.

Q.
Fun fact we can't Google about you?
A.

Backstreet Boys “I Want It That Way” makes me unreasonably happy.
